Federal Government Invests $2 Billion to Construct Nearly 17000 Homes in Canada
According to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the federal government will invest nearly $2 billion to build approximately 16,800 homes across the country.
Canada has a housing shortage as well as an expensive housing market. As a result, Canadians are becoming increasingly concerned about the country’s approach to inflation. The federal government devised this solution to aid in the resolution of the housing crisis.
At a press conference in Kitchener, Ontario, the prime minister declared that extra financial projects will result in the construction of close to 17,000 dwellings. Along with Housing and Diversity and Inclusion Minister Ahmed Hussen, Trudeau announced that the federal government will build 10,800 new homes, 6,000 of which will be affordable, as part of the Affordable Housing Innovation Fund.
Federal Govt’s “Affordable Innovation Fund”
The federal government’s Affordable Innovation Fund, the rent-to-own program, and the third phase of the Rapid Housing Initiative are among the funding projects. Two of the three projects will be funded by the Affordable Housing Innovation Fund, which was established in 2016 to increase the availability of affordable housing by collaborating with private sector organizations, non-profits, community housing organizations, Indigenous communities, and various levels of government.
The Rapid Housing Initiative, which was launched in 2020, provided funding for the rapid construction of new housing as well as the acquisition of existing buildings in order to convert them into affordable housing units. Trudeau stated that the first two rounds are expected to produce approximately 10,000 units, 2,500 more than the 7,500 units originally planned. This figure includes over 3,300 units for women and over 4,200 units for Indigenous Peoples.
In addition, the federal government is developing a five-year rent-to-own pilot program to assist in the development and testing of rent-to-own models and projects. This will enable residents that are struggling to save to move from renting to owning.
“This is truly about helping Canadians access safe and affordable housing that meets their needs. We know Canadians have different housing needs depending on where they sit on the housing spectrum,” said the Prime Minister.
Rapid Housing Initiative
Budget 2022 proposed investments to build more homes and make housing more affordable for Canadians, including $1.5 billion for the Rapid Housing Initiative, with $500 million allocated through the Cities Stream and $1 billion allocated through the Projects Stream. The remaining $200 million will go to the rent-to-own stream of the new Affordable Housing Innovation Fund.
“When people have stable homes, they can build more stable lives. They can participate and create their communities, they can contribute their skills to businesses and organizations in our economy, and we all benefit from that,” said Trudeau.
These initiatives will complement the federal government’s efforts to increase the housing supply and construct more affordable housing for people across the country. To date, the federal government has assisted in the housing of over 1.2 million Canadians, including through the Rapid Housing Initiative.
While Canada’s 10-year National Housing Strategy, announced in 2017, aimed to invest more than $72 billion in new housing, $26.5 billion has already been invested, with 106,100 units built and 254,600 units repaired.
These government initiatives and investments are intended to boost the Canadian economy while generating enough middle-class jobs in the housing and construction industries.
